Champion community voices. Drive place-based change. Create impact where it matters most.

James Cook University is seeking a Senior Research Officer, Community Engagement to support the delivery of FNQ Connect — a transformative collective impact initiative strengthening disability and rehabilitation services across Far North Queensland.

Based at The Cairns Institute, this role works at the heart of community-led change. You’ll collaborate closely with communities across Kowanyama, the Tablelands and Cairns, ensuring lived experience, cultural knowledge and local leadership shape decision-making and outcomes.

About the role

Working as part of the FNQ Connect Backbone Team, you will support community engagement, coordinate place-based projects and guide action learning alongside Community Champions and Action Groups. Your work will ensure community voices are central to evaluation, learning and continuous improvement, and that culturally responsive, inclusive practices underpin all engagement activities.

You will also contribute to high-quality reporting, presentations and knowledge sharing, represent FNQ Connect at forums and events, and support the initiative’s long-term sustainability through funding and policy-related work.

About you

You are an experienced community-engaged researcher or practitioner with strong facilitation and relationship-building skills. You bring a deep commitment to culturally safe practice, experience working alongside Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, and a passion for place-based approaches that translate evidence into action.

Why join JCU and FNQ Connect?

At JCU, you’ll be part of a values-led university committed to reconciliation, equity and regional impact. This role offers meaningful work, strong community connections, and the opportunity to help shape more inclusive systems across Far North Queensland.

We also offer:

  • A generous superannuation scheme with up to 17% employer contributions with UniSuper
  • 36.25-hour full-time working week
  • 5 weeks of annual recreation leave plus leave loading
  • 15 days paid sick/carers leave per year
  • Up to 12 months paid parental leave
  • A range of flexible working options
  • Attractive options for salary packaging
  • Staff study assistance and paid study leave
  • Ongoing professional development support
  • Corporate discount on health insurance
  • Free Employee Assistance Program (coaching and counselling)
