James Cook University is seeking an experienced and dynamic communications professional to lead the strategic promotion of JCU’s research excellence. As the Manager, Research Impact and Communications, you will drive the creation of high-impact, research-focused content and communication strategies that showcase the University’s strengths, support institutional priorities, and enhance the visibility and influence of JCU’s research across the tropics and beyond.

In this pivotal role, you will work collaboratively with researchers, Marketing, Media, Research Institutes and Colleges to deliver cohesive, targeted and engaging communications across multiple platforms. You will lead the production of capability statements, annual reports, project summaries and high-value promotional materials, while advising on research impact, enabling training, and enhancing engagement with donors, partners and community stakeholders. Event coordination, including research-focused events and workshops, forms an important part of this position.

This role offers the opportunity to shape institutional messaging, strengthen research impact capability, and help tell the stories that define JCU’s contribution to the world.

What you will bring:

  • Qualifications and extensive experience in research communications, media or a related field

  • Strong capability in producing high-quality, multi-format content, including use of digital tools, AI and large language models

  • Exceptional writing, storytelling and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex research for diverse audiences

  • Experience managing events, publications and stakeholder engagement activities

  • High-level digital literacy and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines

  • Knowledge of research impact principles and experience applying them across institution-wide initiatives
