James Cook University (JCU) is seeking a dynamic and strategic leader to manage and grow its Graduate Research School (GRS). As the Manager, GRS, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective delivery of Higher Degree by Research (HDR) training and strengthening the systems, policies, and partnerships that support JCU’s research excellence.

Reporting to the Dean, Graduate Research and Researcher Development, you’ll lead major initiatives that enhance the quality and impact of HDR programs, while also managing the operations of the GRS and fostering a high-performing, collaborative team culture.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership of the Graduate Research School
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in HDR training delivery
  • Manage and enhance systems, policies, and reporting frameworks for HDR compliance and excellence
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the university and research sectors
  • Translate research education strategy into action through effective project and team management

What you’ll bring:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and relevant experience in research education or higher education leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage resources, and drive strategic outcomes
  • High-level communication skills—written and verbal—with experience in policy development and stakeholder engagement
  • Proven ability to lead organisational change and deliver complex programs
  • Deep understanding of the Australian research training environment
  • A Higher Degree by Research qualification is desirable

 

The Graduate Research School (GRS) at James Cook University supports the development and success of Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates across all disciplines. As a central hub for research training, the GRS provides leadership in research education policy, candidature management, and the enhancement of HDR programs. It works collaboratively with colleges, supervisors, and external partners to ensure HDR candidates receive high-quality support and training, aligned with national standards and JCU’s strategic focus on research that addresses the needs of Northern Australia and the Tropics.
