We now have an exciting opportunity for an energetic and experienced Laboratory and Technical Support Advisor, Chemistry to join a team of enthusiastic support staff dedicated to ensuring a positive laboratory experience for staff and students. 

  • Full time continuing | 36.25hrs per week 
  • Based at our Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus
  • HEWL 6: $90,821 - $98,369 per annum plus up to 17% employer superannuation contributions, leave loading and other generous employee benefits

ABOUT THE ROLE

Enable the delivery of contemporary Chemistry undergraduate practical teaching activities and support efficiency through provisions of expert scientific and technical advisory services, preparing learning materials, and maintaining specialised equipment and facilities to ensure staff and students have a unique hands-on learning experience. 

In this hands‑on role, you will deliver expert scientific and technical advisory services to academic staff, researchers and students, ensuring high‑quality learning experiences and safe, compliant laboratory operations. You will play a key role in supporting practical delivery,  teaching laboratories, intensives and workshops while contributing to continuous improvement of laboratory and technical support services.

WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO THE ROLE

 To succeed in this role, you will have demonstrable experience in the following:

  • Degree qualifications in Chemistry with relevant work experience, ideally with experience in both organic and inorganic chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting teaching and/or research laboratories, with strong working knowledge of laboratory procedures, policies and safe work practices.
  • Proven understanding of Work Health and Safety legislation to ensure a safe and the ability to apply it practically to deliver safe and compliant laboratory environments.
  • Use of specialised advanced instrumentation, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), ion chromatography (IC), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrochemical applications. 
  • Demonstrated functional supervisory skills, demonstrating and overseeing the use of technical equipment to ensure safety performance is achieved. 
  • Strong organisational, problem‑solving and administrative skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritise competing deadlines and exercise sound judgement in a complex work environment.

 

Special Conditions 

It is a requirement of this position to hold the following:

  • Current First Aid Certificate; 
  • Working with Children Blue Card
  • Current C’ Class Queensland drivers license; and 
  • The ability and willingness to meet manual handling demands.
