James Cook University is seeking a Laboratory and Technical Support Assistant to play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This is a great opportunity to contribute to a positive student experience while working in a dynamic and practical setting.

What you’ll do

As part of a collaborative technical team, you will help ensure laboratories and teaching spaces are safe, well-equipped and ready for use. You will:

• Provide technical support for teaching activities, ensuring equipment and materials are prepared and available on time
• Assist with the maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment and facilities
• Ensure teaching spaces meet safety, hygiene and compliance requirements
• Support staff, students and visitors with practical laboratory needs
• Promote a strong safety culture by adhering to Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements and improving procedures and practices
• Contribute to continuous improvement of systems, protocols and service delivery

What you’ll bring

You are a practical, reliable and safety-focused individual who enjoys supporting others and working as part of a team. You will demonstrate:

• Relevant qualifications and/or experience aligned with the appropriate HEW level
• Experience working in a scientific or research laboratory environment
• Sound understanding of WHS legislation and its application in laboratory settings
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Additional requirements

• Current First Aid Certificate
• Current Queensland ‘C’ class driver licence
• Current Working with Children Blue Card
• Q Fever vaccination (or demonstrated immunity, where required)
• Compliance with relevant sector vaccination requirements
• Ability to travel to remote locations across North West Queensland (including overnight stays)
• Willingness to work occasional after-hours as required
