James Cook University is seeking a Laboratory and Technical Support Assistant to play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This is a great opportunity to contribute to a positive student experience while working in a dynamic and practical setting.
What you’ll do
As part of a collaborative technical team, you will help ensure laboratories and teaching spaces are safe, well-equipped and ready for use. You will:
- Provide technical support for teaching activities, ensuring equipment and materials are prepared and available on time
- Assist with the maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment and facilities
- Ensure teaching spaces meet safety, hygiene and compliance requirements
- Support staff, students and visitors with practical laboratory needs
- Promote a strong safety culture by adhering to Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements and improving procedures and practices
- Contribute to continuous improvement of systems, protocols and service delivery
What you’ll bring
You are a practical, reliable and safety-focused individual who enjoys supporting others and working as part of a team. You will demonstrate:
- Relevant qualifications and/or experience aligned with the appropriate HEW level
- Experience working in a scientific or research laboratory environment
- Sound understanding of WHS legislation and its application in laboratory settings
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Additional requirements
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Current Queensland ‘C’ class driver licence
- Current Working with Children Blue Card
- Q Fever vaccination (or demonstrated immunity, where required)
- Compliance with relevant sector vaccination requirements
- Ability to travel to remote locations across North West Queensland (including overnight stays)
- Willingness to work occasional after-hours as required
