Expression of Interest – Casual Laboratory and Technical Support
Creating a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally and globally, James Cook University (JCU) is seeking Expressions of Interest for Laboratory and Technical Support to support practical learning and teaching activities across a variety of discipline areas including medicine, nursing and allied health, engineering, animal handling, aquaculture and across the sciences.
What You Can Accomplish in the Role
In this role, you will deliver high-quality technical support that enables undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to achieve academic objectives, helping to provide students with a hands-on, practical learning experience.
You will contribute to:
- Supporting undergraduate classes, field trips, intensives, and workshops, ensuring activities are delivered on time and in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintaining safe and compliant teaching and research environments through cleaning, waste management, equipment servicing, and sterilisation.
- Ensuring Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are understood and adhered to within laboratory settings.
- Providing guidance to staff and students on laboratory procedures, policies, and relevant legislative requirements.
- Supporting continuous improvement by contributing to service enhancements and evaluating user outcomes and satisfaction.
What You Can Bring to the Role
You are a proactive and reliable professional with strong technical and organisational skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality support services.
You will bring:
- Relevant qualifications and/or experience related to the discipline
- Experience in standard laboratory and/or field techniques, including familiarity with common laboratory and field equipment.
- Sound understanding of WHS legislation and its practical application within laboratory environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to delivering a customer-focused service.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a high-volume environment.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, and the ability to learn new systems quickly with attention to detail.
Additional Requirements
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Current Queensland C Class Driver Licence
- Current Working with Children Blue Card
- Specific certifications and vaccinations may be required for some roles*
