We're Hiring!
Asset Accountant
- 494761
- Townsville
- Professional
- Full time
- Closing on: Apr 9 2026
James Cook University (JCU) is creating a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally and globally.
We now have an exciting opportunity for an Asset Accountant to join our team in the Financial and Business Services Directorate.
If you’re an experienced finance professional with strong technical expertise and a proactive approach to problem solving, this is an opportunity to contribute to the University’s financial integrity through specialist asset accounting and financial management services.
- Full-time, continuing position
- Based at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas
- HEWL 8: $111,960 - $128,567 per annum plus up to 17% employer superannuation contributions, leave loading and other generous employee benefits.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is not your typical asset accounting role. As Asset Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in delivering the financial accounting, reporting and analysis that underpins the University’s asset base and major capital projects.
You will deliver high-quality fixed asset accounting activities, including maintaining the asset register and performing capitalisation, depreciation, revaluation and reconciliation processes. You will apply strong technical expertise and professional judgement to resolve complex accounting matters, deliver accurate reporting, and provide trusted advice aligned with legislation, accounting standards and best practice.
Importantly, this role will also have a strong focus on capital project accounting. You will partner closely with project managers and finance colleagues to monitor project budgets, forecasts and actual expenditure, provide clear financial insights across the project lifecycle, and support effective decision-making on major capital initiatives. This is an opportunity to be at the centre of projects that deliver lasting impact across the University.
A key upcoming focus of the role will be contributing to the improvement and implementation of asset management software - a major project that will strengthen how assets are tracked, managed and reported across the organisation. You will have the chance to help shape better systems, improve processes, and influence how asset management is delivered into the future.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
We are seeking a CPA or CA qualified professional (or other recognised accounting qualification) with proven experience in asset accounting or a similar role, and a strong working knowledge of accounting standards, principles and practices. You will bring well-developed analytical skills, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to present complex financial information clearly and build effective working relationships across a range of stakeholders.
