The Station Assistant supports the efficient and safe operation of Orpheus Island Research Station by providing high-quality cleaning and housekeeping services, assisting with logistics, inventory, and basic maintenance, and participating in daily station operations. The role includes structured training and development towards more advanced responsibilities, contributing to a culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement while supporting staff, researchers, and students in a remote research environment.

Key Accountabilities and Deliverables
1. Perform high-quality cleaning and housekeeping of research station infrastructure, including offices, labs, communal areas, bathrooms and accommodation facilities.
2. Maintain a safe and hygienic work and living environment in compliance with Workplace Health and Safety standards.
3. Handle cleaning supplies and equipment responsibly, ensuring efficient and safe use.
4. Assist with basic logistics, housekeeping tasks, and general maintenance under supervision.
5. Participate in inventory management, stocktake of cleaning and operational supplies, and restocking as required.
6. Shadow and assist Research Station staff in day-to-day tasks to develop familiarity with station operations.
7. Participate in structured training to develop skills aligned with the Station Officer role (e.g., WHS, first aid, basic maintenance, admin support, equipment setup).
8. Contribute to a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and respect for environmental values, including understanding of relevant Marine Park regulations.
9. Show initiative, reliability, and interest in progressing toward higher responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience

1. Qualifications and experience in line with the appropriate Higher Education Worker Level as provided in the Enterprise Agreement.
2. Previous experience in cleaning, housekeeping, or general maintenance duties
3. Physical capacity to undertake cleaning and manual handling tasks in a tropical, outdoor environment.
4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a willingness to learn and take direction.
5. Basic computer literacy and willingness to develop further skills
6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a remote, team-based environment.
7. Interest in building a long-term career at JCU, including taking on future responsibilities in operations, research support, or logistics.

Special Conditions
• It is a requirement of the position to hold a:
o Current Senior First Aid, CPR and Oxygen Provider Certificate
o Working with Children (Blue Card)
• It is a requirement of this position to work and live remotely on a research station accessed only by water transport.
• It is a requirement of this position to work on a rotational roster system suitable to the management and operation of the Station, which may include outside-of-normal-hours work.
• Participation in competency and compliance training, as well as adherence to the Enterprise Agreement and Code of Conduct is required.
